Wednesday B All-day walk – Upware and Wicken Fen

Start time: 10.15
Walk length: Approximately 7 miles (5 miles in the morning and 2 miles after lunch).
Walk details: No stiles but 3 steep footbridges. About half of the walk is on hard surfaces. There may be some muddy sections.
Directions from Cambridge: Take the A10 towards Ely. At the roundabout in Stretham, turn right onto the A1123 towards Wicken. Follow this road for just over 3 miles, until you see the right hand turn signposted Upware and Swaffham Prior. Take this road into Upware. In Upware, follow the main road round a sharp left hand bend and park along the side of this road or in the car park, if space.
Meeting point and parking: By the small car park in Upware, just before you reach the bridge and lock. Postcode is CB7 5YQ.
Lunch arrangements: At the National Trust Docky Hut Café at the Wicken Fen Visitor Centre. Their full menu includes soup, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, paninis and pasties. If you would like something off this list, you will need to order when we arrive. It is, however, half-term, and may be very busy, so what is available could be quite limited.
There is, however, a basic menu of sandwiches, or soup, which we can order in advance:
Soup (variety will vary depending on what’s available on the day) with bread and butter £5.50
Sandwiches from £3.50
Fillings:
Egg mayo and cress
Ham salad
Tuna mayo and cucumber
Cheddar and red onion marmalade
Vegan cheeze and pickle
To order in advance, please include your menu choice when you book in for the walk.
We may have to sit outside if the café seating is full. Dogs are allowed to queue with you when you order food, but are not allowed to sit in the café. There may be seating available in other buildings.
For those who are bringing their own lunch, there are picnic benches nearby.
