Sunday C Walk Fleam Dyke

August 21, 2022 @ 9:45 am - 1:00 pm

Please phone Barbara on 01223 890194 or 07954402337, or email with your name and phone number if you wish to join the walk.

This is a linear walk, from Balsham to Fulbourn, so there are some fairly complicated logistics involved!  As I won’t be certain about the number of walkers until the day itself, I suggest we all meet at 9.45 at the end point of the walk, the parking area in front of the entrance to Fulbourn Fen in Stonebridge Lane, Fulbourn CB21 5BW. You can get to Fulbourn easily from Cherry Hinton, passing the White Hart pub going straight along Cambridge Road. When you get to Fulbourn, go straight across the mini roundabout and then bear right into Doggett Lane. Turn left on a double bend into Home End Road. At a T-junction by the Fulbourn Centre, turn right into Stonebridge Lane. The parking area is about half a mile along this lane.

In Fulbourn we can then pile into as few cars as possible, leaving as many cars as we can here, and drive to the start of the walk in Fox Lane, Balsham CB21 4EZ. To get there from Fulbourn, at the top of Stonebridge Lane, turn left into Home End Road. At the T-Junction at the end of the road, turn left into Balsham Road. This is then a straight road to Balsham, which crosses the A11. When you enter Balsham, Fox Lane is the first turning on the left. Please park here on the left-hand side of the lane about 200 yards beyond the last house on the left, number 41.

The narrow path along the top of Fleam Dyke is a little tricky for 2 miles or so as it is uneven and steep in places, and the many tree roots crossing it are a trip hazard, so you must keep your eyes on the ground. Sticks and strong soles are recommended. The last part of the dyke is much more level. Nonetheless, it is a very interesting and attractive walk. Unfortunately, I have been unable to arrange a guide as I mentioned I would try to do earlier. Our coffee break will be at Mutlow Hill, a Bronze Age barrow.

When we get to the end of the walk in Fulbourn, we will decide who is going to take the drivers of the cars left in Balsham back to their cars – this may require the use of one or two cars.

Additional information:  Covid-19 is resurging and we must be very careful.  Please do not join the walk if you have any symptoms, such as a headache, a strong feeling of tiredness, a sore throat or a cough.  In fact it is probably best not to join us if you feel at all unwell.
