Wednesday B Morning walk – Haddenham and Wilburton

July 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Wednesday B Morning walk – Haddenham and Wilburton – 6 miles

Meeting point is at Twentypence Garden Centre in Wilburton, CB6 3RN.

They have kindly agreed we can park there, please tuck cars into overflow parking on right as go into centre. I did say I thought some people may well pop in at the end to have a coffee or lunch, they have a nice café with lots of choice and seems there may be some deals for senior citizens if that applies to you!

This is a walk that takes in some lovely meadows and lots of history. In Flower Meadow with a good imagination historic effects of ridge and furrow farming can be made out. At Pond field it is suggested the bumps are due to quarrying for clay in the past and the pond itself was probably used to fish for Carp in 16th century. We pass another lovely meadow for wildlife called Fairchilds Meadow with some good views of Ely Cathedral along the way. We come out in Wilburton, making our way back through an orchard, fields and a wildlife reserve back to the garden centre. The reserve is known as Dog House Grove, it has clay lined fish ponds that date back to use by monks from Ely in the 7th century.

I recommend trousers and sturdy walking shoes/boots for the walk and available long sleeves to cover arms. It can be muddy after rain and is very overgrown in places.

Other points of interest while you are in the area is an interesting craft centre in Haddenham and a pottery in Wilburton.
