Walk approximately 7.5 miles, with the morning slightly shorter than the afternoon. The morning includes 4 manageable stiles and fairly even ground. The afternoon covers more undulating ground. The recce highlighted areas of overgrown grasses and some tall nettles, so shorts-wearers beware! Trousers might be preferable.
Directions from Cambridge: A1307 through Linton towards Haverhill, A1017, A1092. Route goes through Clare to Cavendish, with a left hand turn towards the Green.
Parking: Free parking near the Green, Cavendish. Please car share where possible. Walkers gather near the George Public House by 10.30 a.m.
Lunch: At approximately 12.15 p.m. in Clare Country Park, either in the old station café, ‘Platform 1’ or in the park where there are several benches. Food orders will be taken at the beginning of the walk. Hot and cold drinks are available, as are filled rolls, paninis, soup, jacket potatoes and cake. The price of a filled roll is approximately £3.95. Portion size is not as huge as at some pubs for those who prefer a lighter lunch.
Afternoon walkers: If you wish to explore Clare and its Country Park in the morning and walk in the afternoon, you can park in its car park for £2. The post code is CO10 8NW (Grid Ref TL 7701 4516) All day walkers will need to drive back from Cavendish through Clare so lifts should be available for those who want them.
