Wednesday B All-day walk – Steeple Bumpstead

July 6, 2022 @ 10:15 am - 2:30 pm

Start time: 10.15 am

Walk length: Approx. 5.5 miles

Walk details:  This is going to be different from other walks we have done. It will only be approximately 5.5 miles because I am going to share with you some of the history of this lovely village and surroundings. I have already taken a smaller group round and it is surprising how long it takes so I can’t make the route any longer.

This very pleasant and pretty village has the river Stour running through the middle of it. There are 52 listed buildings in and around the surrounding area of the village, but we won’t see them all. There have been a few well known people live in the village and the area. Where does the village name come from, that too will be shared with you. If this sounds interesting to you, then come along and learn more.

Directions, meeting point and parking: The walk will start behind the village hall in Bower Hall Drive. Postcode: CB9 7ED.

The best route is via Haverhill. From the Haverhill bypass (A1017) take the B1057 to Steeple Bumpstead. As you reach the village turn right, then next left, signposted Finchingfield, over the bridge and bear right, round the bend into Chapel Street. Go along this street until you come to The Fox and Hounds pub. Go left here signposted to Finchingfield again. You will pass the entrance to the village hall on your right, but don’t go into that car park. Take the next right turn into Bower Hall Drive. Follow this road until you come to the playing field. We will park as many cars as possible in the small car park then the rest will park on the side of the road which is not busy.

Lunch arrangements: We will have lunch on the green. The cars are right next to the green so you can leave your lunch in your car. I will be taking my picnic chair with me as there aren’t many seats on the green. We will have our lunch then go to the The Fox and Hounds pub for a drink and the toilet. The green is only a couple of minutes walk from the pub. The pub does not serve food now until 4.30 pm.
