Walk length: 7 miles (4.5 miles before lunch and 2.5 miles in the afternoon)

Walk details: A pleasant walk through the north Essex countryside. Undulating in parts with one longer climb (c. 750 m) in the early part of the walk. Plenty of good views. Good underfoot, lots of wide tracks. No stiles.

Meeting place and parking: At the car park behind Little Chesterford Village Hall (Church End Cottages, High St, Little Chesterford, Saffron Walden CB10 1TT). A donation of £1 /person is suggested. If the car park is full, you can park on the High Street nearby.

Directions: From Cambridge, head for the A1301 and follow this, crossing the A505 just south of Sawston, to the junction with the A11 at Stumps Cross. Follow signs for Saffron Walden (B184) for just less than 2 miles. You will reach a roundabout, take the third exit on to High Street, Little Chesterford. Head down High Street for 0.3 mile, the village hall is on the left just before the road turns sharp right. The car park is round to the left behind the village hall.

If using the M11, exit at Junction 10 and take the A505 eastwards for approx. 1.5 miles, turn right on to A1301 at the roundabout (with a BP garage) and then as above.

Lunch arrangements: Lunch will be at The Crown in Little Walden, which we have used many times previously. The menu can be found at – http://www.thecrownlittlewalden.co.uk/#food. Orders no later than Sunday evening, 27 August at 6 pm (as the pub is not open on Monday and Tuesday).

There is a wide range of options including sandwiches, baguettes, soup etc. Prices are not given but have always been reasonable. The pub is dog friendly and dogs can be taken inside.

If you prefer to bring your own food, there is a little green with picnic tables and benches close to the pub. If wet, the church just along the road has a porch with a step to sit on which would keep people dry.
