Wednesday B All-day walk – Hilton, Conington and Elsworth

June 7, 2023 @ 10:15 am - 3:00 pm

Start time: 10.15

Walk length: Approx. 7.8 miles – 4.9 miles in the morning, 2.9 miles after lunch.

Walk details: The paths are mainly well established and were virtually mud-free when we walked them at the beginning of May. However, with relatively recent downpours there may still be a few patches of mud in places. There are 2 stiles both of which are sturdy and easy to negotiate.

Meeting place and parking: Village Hall car park in Hilton. Post Code: PE28 9PF; OS Grid Reference: TL292 661; Coordinates (52.278693 – 0.107283)

From Cambridge via A14: Leave A14 at exit 24 heading for Huntingdon on A1307. At the first roundabout take 4th exit to bridge across A14, then at second roundabout take first turning onto A1307 towards Huntingdon. From A1307 (the old A14) take exit 27 towards Fen Drayton, Fenstanton, and Hilton. You then make a left turn. Follow this around a long curve to right. Don’t turn left to Connington but at the end of the road turn left on Hilton Road. Continue to the Village Green. The Village Hall is on the right with entrances to the car park at either end.

Alternatively, from A428/A1198 roundabout (Caxton Gibbet) take A1198 northwards towards Godmanchester. At roundabout at end of Bypass around Papworth Everard go straight-over onto B1040 St. Ives Road. As you enter Hilton at roundabout turn right onto Church End. Village Hall is on the left just after the (shallow) ford.

Lunch arrangements: Lunch at the George and Dragon in Elsworth. Dogs are allowed indoors but the pub would like to know how many as this affects where they will seat us.

The pub has supplied us with a special walkers’ “Lighter Bites” menu (see below) and this looks to be fairly good value. If you would prefer to order from their main menu, it’s available on their website: www.georgeanddragon-elsworth.co.uk

For those bringing a packed lunch, there is an open playing field behind the thatched bus stop further along the road from the pub, which has seats in front of the pavilion. There is also the village shop near the pavilion if you fancy buying a drink or a candy bar. The pub requests that we do not eat our own food on the premises.

Leaders: Hilary and Steve

Booking: Please email Hilary at hilary.hladky@gmail.com to confirm – how many people are coming; if you’re bringing a dog; to order food at the pub.

The pub is not open on Mondays and they have asked to have our food order by Sunday morning. So please email your food order to me by 8pm on Saturday 3rd June.
