Wednesday B All-day group – Fowlmere
August 16 @ 10:15 am - 12:45 pm
Start time: 10.15
Walk length: Morning walk of 5 miles (with possible additional 1-mile bird watching amble post-lunch – see ‘Lunch Arrangements’ below).
Walk details: The morning route is a virtual figure-of eight. The first loop, of 3.6 miles, is RSPB Fowlmere-Fowlmere Airfield-Fowlmere village (including the Round Moat)-RSPB Fowlmere. The second loop is a circuit of the nature reserve, which is free entry, to make a total walk of 5 miles. One gentle incline early in the walk but otherwise basically flat, good tracks and paths, no stiles.
NB: This is a repeat of a recent Sunday C Group walk led by the same leader.
Meeting place and parking: Meet at RSPB Fowlmere Nature Reserve. Nearest postcode: SG8 6EZ.
Park at far end of the Nature Reserve car park. There is a £2 per car parking charge for non-RSPB members (members need to display membership card in their car windscreen), payable by phone or cash in a ‘Donations’ black post box by the entrance hut.
Directions from Cambridge: Take the A10 towards Royston. Go over the Foxton rail crossing and in one mile reach the Fowlmere-Shepreth crossroads. Turn left towards Fowlmere. After one mile, turn right by the cemetery. Follow minor road for just under half a mile and at the RSPB sign turn left onto small road into the RSPB Fowlmere Nature Reserve (watch out for two barely visible speed humps!).
Lunch arrangements: At the end of the morning walk, there is an option to join the leader for a 20-30 minute picnic lunch in a pleasant seating area near the entrance to the reserve (where there is a recently-installed toilet) and then go back to visit one or two of the reserve’s hides and spend a bit of time bird-watching and taking in the scenery.
About a mile of walking in total. The picnic area is adjacent to the car park so lunch food/drink can be left in cars while doing the morning walk.
Leader: Phil
Booking: To book a place on the walk, please email phillipjhastings@gmail.com by 6.00 pm on Tuesday 15 August.
Please advise leader when booking in for the walk if you would like to take up the picnic lunch/bird-watching option.
