Our walk on 25 July will start from St Helen’s picnic site car park near Santon Downham, TL826874, nearest Postcode IP27 0TJ – click here for map.

Directions: Take the A11 to the roundabout approx 2 miles west of Thetford town centre. Turn left on the B1107 towards Brandon.  After approximately 2.5 miles turn right on the minor road towards Santon Downham.  After a further mile, just beyond the church (rather hidden by trees!), fork right into the centre of Santon Downham.  About 200m beyond the Forest Offices car park, cross the bridge over the Little Ouse. After ~100m, and before you reach the level crossing, turn right along a narrow metalled road and follow this for about 0.5 miles to the St Helen’s car park.

Route: Santon House – Santon Warren – Little Ouse  – Thetford Warren Lodge – High Lodge Forest Centre – St Edmund Way – Santon Downham – Little Ouse – Santon House : ~12 miles [7.5 am + 4.5 pm]  NB afternoon can be shortened to 3.5miles if too hot.  After mid-morning most of the route is within or close to trees!

Lunch: at High Lodge Forest Centre. Menu: Fairly basic (see below)– sandwiches, baguettes, salad bowls, no soup but some hot meals etc. No alcohol served.  Own food may be consumed on the tables outside.
