Thursday evening walk – Devil’s Dyke, Newmarket

June 6 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The walk starts from the July racecourse grounds at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday 6th June.  To get to the racecourse take the A1303 or A1304 to Newmarket.  Just before Newmarket there is a large roundabout labelled ‘Castlebridge’ with a statue of a man with a rearing horse.  Take the first exit marked ‘July racecourse’ and ‘National Stud’.  Follow this short road round until you come to a cul-de-sac with plenty of parking space.

The walk begins by heading south-east along the Devil’s Dyke towards Wood Ditton.      We then drop down and take a short but unavoidable walk along a busy road before turning into a quiet farm track and re-joining a pleasantly wooded section of the Dyke.

N.B. Some sections of the Dyke path contain a lot of exposed or half-hidden tree roots, so care is needed when walking.  If it’s wet it might be advisable to bring a stick, as the path can get quite slippery.  There are also one or two moderately steep steps.  There may be lots of nettles at the start/end of the walk.  Trousers recommended.      Distance 5.5 miles     Further information from leader Anne – phone 01223 840995.   No need to book, just turn up.
