We start from Ashdon windmill (CB10 2JA) at 10.00. The journey to the start is complicated by road works which may or may not mean road closures on Sundays, so the route is not the usual one to Ashdon. Drive to Linton on the A1307 out of Cambridge. Just after the traffic lights in Linton, turn right towards Hadstock and Saffron Walden. In Hadstock, turn left towards Bartlow. In Bartlow, at the T-Junction turn right towards Ashdon. As you enter Ashdon, take the first left towards Steventon End. For the windmill – which is not signposted – take the first turning on the right. It’s a single track road and easy to miss, but there is a dark green box on the corner (telephones? electricity?). Follow the road round to the top of the hill, where, just before the windmill there is a car park on the left.

This is a circular walk, which undulates around the village. The total distance is 4.5 miles, but there will be the option of a short cut totalling 3 miles. It is mainly on public footpaths with short stretches of road, some without pavements. The coffee break will be in a meadow just before the start of the short cut.
