Barbara has sent this further information for those who would like to walk on Sunday.
“A second recce of the walk yesterday (for the walk on Sunday 1st) showed that it is very muddy in many places, after more heavy rain.  Having a walking pole to help balance would be useful.   Also, there are two slippery stiles.  In spite of these difficulties, it’s a good walk and worth doing!”

Take the A11 to the Saffron Walden turn off, but once off the A11, follow signs to Great Chesterford & Newport. As you enter Newport, go under a railway bridge. Continue along the High Street and take the left turn to Debden. Close to the turning, you go over a narrow, humped bridge and immediately turn right into a lane. Park on the left, where we’ll meet.  (For information: The nearest place to the rendezvous point is Newport Fire Station CB11 3PE, in Debden Road just by the humped bridge.)  We set off, past the quarry, then up to the outskirts of Debden, walking through fields and woods, past Debden church and then back down through open country to Newport.  Three road crossings, otherwise we’ll be on footpaths which can be muddy.  It’s just about 5 miles.  If any queries, please phone Barbara on 01223 890194.
