We start from Ashdon windmill (CB10 2JA). Drive to Linton on the A1307 out of Cambridge. After the Linton traffic lights, take the 3^rd turning on the right towards Bartlow and the Camps. At the Bartlow crossroads, turn right towards Ashdon, and Saffron Walden. As you enter Ashdon, take the first left towards Steventon End. For the windmill – which is not signposted – take the first turning on the right. It’s a single track road and easy to miss, but there is a dark green box on the corner (telephones? electricity?). Follow the road round to the top of the hill, where, just before the windmill there is a car park on the left.

We walk along the Harcamlow Way down into Ashdon. Then we follow the course of the River Bourne along a path which can be muddy in places, to the small hamlet of Water End. From there we follow the lane up to the Ashdon – Radwinter road, which we cross, then walk along fields and footpaths to Camps End. Then, round the eastern edge of Langley Wood and back to the windmill. Total distance, 5 miles. Boots and sticks recommended for coping with muddy patches.
