Sustainable living workshops.

Carbon conversations flyerWe are interested in finding people who are already involved in outdoor pursuits and who would like to take their interest further by exploring what else they could do in their daily lives to reduce their impact on the natural world.

What we’d like to ask your members to do is to consider whether they’d like to take part in two 2-hour workshops in Cambridge led by experienced facilitators from Carbon Conversations.  Carbon Conversations is a national project led by COIN, the Climate Outreach and Information Network; this is an established approach that has been used by community groups across the UK since 2009.  The workshops would offer the opportunity to explore, in a friendly atmosphere, possibilities as well as barriers to changing our daily lives for the benefit of the environment. Participants would also take part in interviews before and after the course, conducted by researchers at the Third Sector Research Centre at the University of Southampton.  To say thank you, each workshop participant would receive:

  • ·         An organic vegetable box up to the value of £21 from  the Cambridge Organic Food Company
  • ·         A workshop handbook
  • ·         Travel expenses and refreshments

If any of your members might be interested in participating in these workshops, we would like to invite them to complete a very brief online survey (we can also make paper copies available for anyone that would prefer this).  Places on the workshops are limited and so we might not be able to accommodate everyone that completes the survey in the rest of the study.  Although survey participants that don’t go on to participate in the workshops and interviews aren’t eligible for the organic vegetable box, workshop handbook, travel expenses and refreshments, we will enter all those completing the survey into a prize draw for a £20 John Lewis voucher.

We were wondering if you could aid us in this project by helping us to recruit your members in whichever way you consider most suitable. This could include any of the following:

  • ·         Passing on an e-mail from us asking your members to participate in the project
  • ·         Putting up a poster on your noticeboard (if you have one)
  • ·         Distributing flyers to your members (I attach one as an example)
  • ·         Us attending one of your events with our recruitment materials
  • ·         Promoting the study in your newsletter or on your website
  • ·         Following your suggestions of how best to talk to your members

We will be able to cover room hire, refreshments and a contribution to any administrative costs associated with recruiting participants.

This research will benefit a range of environmental community projects by adding to our understanding of how to effectively reach out to a wider audience and engage them in taking action for the environment in their everyday lives. For you as an organisation, participation in this research could be used to demonstrate your commitment to tackling environmental issues.

Please let me know if your organisation might be interested in taking part in the project – either by reply to this email, or you can reach me on 023 8059 25859 (I’m in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays).  If you have any questions or would like to discuss the details of this project further, please do get in touch.  It would also be good to know if you would prefer not to participate at this time.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Emma
